Prescription or over-the-counter medicine belonging to a group called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
Used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach ulcers.
Also used alongside antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori bacteria and to protect the stomach when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the glands in the lining of your stomach.
Standard dose is usually 20mg or 40mg taken once daily, depending on the condition being treated.
Best taken in the morning, roughly 1 hour before a meal or breakfast.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not chew, crush, or break it.
If you have difficulty swallowing, the tablet can be dissolved in a glass of non-carbonated water and taken immediately.
Common side effects include headache, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, or vomiting.
Less common side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness, or mild skin rashes.
Rare serious side effects include severe watery diarrhoea (signs of C. difficile infection), joint or muscle pain, or sudden allergic reactions. Seek prompt medical advice if these occur.
Long-term use (more than 1 year) can increase the risk of bone fractures (especially hip, wrist, or spine) and vitamin B12 or magnesium deficiency.
Inform your doctor immediately if you experience unexpected weight loss, persistent dark/tarry stools, or difficulty swallowing.
Can interact with other medications, including clopidogrel, digoxin, methotrexate, and certain antifungal treatments.
